WOW! Great Discovery

I am preparing for a session with the jr nursing students as they have created a blog for one of their classes. When I was looking at the Page Elements section to see what was available I discovered that a ton of options have been added. At this time the main categories are: News, Communication, Fun & Games, Finance, Sports, Tools, Lifestyle & Technology. Fun but another example of "Too Many Things" :)

And for those of you who are preparing for the GRE there is even a GRE word of the day in the Communication section!

Online Productivity Software

I love Google Docs. It is a great way to store and share documents.

Two other products to be aware of:
SlideShare - a great way to post a PowerPoint presentation on the web
SlideRocket - a great tool to create presentations

A URL for the web page that you created yesterday

If you want to post your web page to the web google docs will provide a url for you. It isn't perfect, but at least you will have a url that you can share with others (but it looks like they will need to log into their google account to access your site).

Here are the steps:
Click on upload and locate your saved .html file
Rename (if you want)
When the document opens click on "Share" then on "Publish as web page". A url for your page will be available. You can also preview your web page.

Sliderocket

This web 2.0 tool - Sliderocket was just shared on our ACL listerv. It is really a powerpoint type presentation with a little excitement

Here is one way sliderocket was used to market the library I just signed up for the private beta -- not sure if it will be free or for a $, but I think it is pretty slick.

I think that we should create a little presentation to market the library. Anyone want to help with it?

del.icio.us

I have been using del.icio.us for some time now. I finally decided to introduce it to my students and one of their assignments will be to create an account and start adding web sites that they think will be helpful to them as a teacher. They are also going to submit at least one web site to a class delicious account that I have created. We will see how it goes.

In the NU Web 2.0 wiki I asked if you would share your delicious name as there may be web sites that we want to share with each other. It is easy to do. When adding tags to an entry just add the tag "for: " and add the person's delicious name (no quotes needed). We can also join each others network so we can easily see what sites we have added. And as Christa mentioned you can keep entries private -- just click in the "do not share" box.

I like the new design for del.icio.us. I think that navigation is easier.

Welcome to Heather

Heather is now part of our exclusive NU-Web 2.0 group! I really don't mean exclusive -exclusive, only exclusive in that we were the ones to choose to get on the Web 2.0 learning rabbit trail (see Gina's blog).

Welcome Heather!

RSS Feeds

I have used Bloglines for a number of years and just recently switched to Google Reader. I think that RSS Readers are great, but my problem is that I forget to look at my feeds. So by the time I think of it I have hundreds of posts to look at and then I get discouraged and don't.

What is the solution? I need to select one or two blogs that I want to keep up with and ditch the rest. I can only take in so much information.... what will the two blogs be? Still working on that.

One great use of Google Reader is that I have created a feed to the blogs of my students. Instead of going to each one of their blogs and trying to find what's new -- I can go to my reader and the new posts are listed for me. This has tremendous use in Education.

I went through the short tutorial by Solinet called "Feed Me". I learned that you can have feeds sent to your cell phone -- not surprising, but really do I want my feeds to follow me every where I go?

Blogs I plan to focus on: What I Learned Today & Information Wants to be Free. I meet the authors of both of these blogs at ACL.

Flickr

I have just created a direct link to this blog from Flickr. I don't have any of my personal pictures on Flickr so am uploading someone else's picture after checking the copyright. This one is has the Creative Commons "Some Rights Reserved" which means I can share and remix, but I need to give attribution to the people who took this picture. I noticed that Flickr provided the attribution.

This is really cool -- to be able to directly link from Flickr to my blogs. I'm sad that there are so many things to learn, and so little time to do so. But things will not slow down just because I can't keep up. The goal is to keep learning ....

NU Library 2.0

I am excited about the opportunity that we will have to discover new things this summer. I think that Learning 2.0 was on my summer goals last summer but I didn't find/take the time to work through them. Now I will have to in order to keep up with the others! This will be fun.
